Night Time Jug Lines

Location: Joe Wheeler State Park and 2nd Creek

Time: 5:00 PM - 2:00 AM
Air Temperature: 90 Degrees
Water Temperature: 85 Degrees

Lake Level:
Weather Conditions: Slight to Moderate winds from the south.

Fished with Doug and Douglas Ainsworth tonight. I got there early to try to catch live bluegill to use to target flatheads. I fished blown over tops with worms and a bobber and managed to catch 14 with Doug’s wife, Shirley.

Douglas dropped 16 jugs at dark along the south shore of Wheeler with fresh cut shad. I dropped 6 along the north west bend then we headed to 2nd creek to drop the rest. We went north of the boat landing at 2nd Creek and dropped 8 more jugs in 8-12 feet of water as the creek narrowed just before the bend. All of these had live bluegill on the bottom hook and cut shad on the top. We dropped 6 more off the rocky point out from the boat landing and baited these the same way and returned to Wheeler.

After a couple hours, we checked my first 6 in wheeler and found a 4 ft long gar, but no cats. We ran back to 2nd Creek and ran the group of 8. We caught one nice blue and found one jug had run away from the others. When we pulled it, it had been tangled over and over around a sunken tree. We managed to pull the entire tree up and untangle it. I can only imagine a flathead did this. We ran the other group of six and caught one more small cat. We also found one more jug had a broken line.

We headed back to Wheeler and pulled Douglas’s jugs. We caught one more small cat. We found 15 of the sixteen pretty easily. We were watching the last one in the spotlight as it was pulled under and it never came back up. It had to have been a big fish. We searched for a good while but never found it.

Overall, it was a blast and a good learning experience for nighttime jug fishing. I think I would repeat the bluegill tactic next time, but concentrate a little more around the creeks and fallen structure. Will definitely do it again soon!

Lake Level: 552.'
Weather Conditions:

Main point of trip was to explore depth finder settings.  I had been studying how to use a depth finder in more detail.  Fished under the bridge.  Set on low frequency.  Was amazed on how well the fish showed up.  Caught a bunch of drum and bluegill.  New depth finder settings made it possible to actually target the fish I was looking at on the depth finder.  Literally caught the fish I was looking at.  Very successful using these new techniques!

Location: 2nd Creek - Wheeler Lake - Alabama

Time: All Cay
Air Temperature:
Water Temperature: 52 degrees.
Lake Level: 551.04
Weather Conditions: Still warm for the fall/winter pattern.

Fished all my normal spots.  Caught a bunch of drum.  Caught one crappie early under the bridge.  Fishing was very slow.

Moved down and fished south of the bridge.  No luck.  Tried fishing south shore in bay near dam.  No luck.  Fished around the lock by the dam in the slack water.  Caught a couple drum.  Nice place to fish.

Returned back to the bridge on the way back towards the landing.  Started picking up nice bluegill and crappie after lunch.  Caught a couple of catfish, too.  Ended up keeping 5-6 crappie and 5-6 bluegill.

Dressed out to be about 2.5# of fillets.  Used Minnows and Bobby Garland 2" swimming minnow jigs.

Wormy.

Location: 2nd Creek - Wheeler Lake - Alabama

Time: Morning - 7:00AM - 3:30 PM
Air Temperature: Cool 60ish in AM - warmed up to 80's.
Water Temperature: 78
Lake Level: 553.92'
Weather Conditions: 7 - 10 MPH North - North West.

Fished 2nd Creek for crappie.  Fished with minnows and jigs.  Fished in front of the landing at first.  Caught 1 crappie in 18' to 24' of water.  Slow.  Moved to other side of bridge to fish flat beside south side of the road.  Caught 5 white bass pretty quickly.  Jessica came up to join, so I fished under the bridge while she was coming.  Bumped bottom and caught 2-3 catfish quickly.

She and I headed out towards the lake and fished the large bay to the west of 2nd Creek, but wind changed and we moved to large bay on the north bank of the main lake.  No crappie, but picked up a nice 16"-18" largemouth and several small bluegill.  Bound the bottom of the bay to be very rocky.  Will be a good spot to shellcracker fish in the spring.

Came home to clean our mixed bag and found the white bass to be full of parasites!!  Will not eat these jokers again, at least for a while...

Lake Level: 555.8'

Took day off (Good Friday) and fished with Doug and Douglas Ainsworth. Started on brush piles by marking and anchoring and casting jigs. Very slow. Caught 1 white bass.

Moved on and caught shad with the casting net and decided to switch over to catfish. Fished 10 jugs for 1.5 hours south of bridge on flats, but didn't catch anything.

Set up below bluff in channel and anchored. Fished for catfish by casting and tight lining on bottom. Caught 1 nice blue cat in 30-35' of water. Overall, very slow day.

Location: Elk River, Joe Wheeler, 2nd Creek - Wheeler Lake - Alabama

Time: Morning - Mid Afternoon
Air Temperature: 49 - 84 degrees
Water Temperature:
Lake Level: 555.77'
Weather Conditions: 1 - 6 MPH South - South East Wind

Took vacation from work to fish. Scouted new water. Started at Elk River. Fished bridge - slow fishing. Was fishing in 12-25' of water. Caught 1 white bass under bridge casting a money milk jig.

No good bays on lower Elk, so rode to Joe Wheeler - 1st Creek area. Fished westward bay inside mouth of Joe Wheeler on drop offs and flats 12-17' of water. Spider rigged and picked up 1 crappie. Moved to back of Joe Wheeler in big bay and spider rigged with no lock.

Moved to 2nd Creek and fished normal brush piles and drop-offs. Picked up a couple spider rigging. Fished bridge bumping bottom. Picked up 1 white bass and 3 channel catfish.

Returned back to Elk and fished bridge with no luck. Ended up keeping 2-3 crappie and 1-2 white bass. Fish cleaned were still with eggs, though I feel most of spawn is over.

Time: Morning - Mid Afternoon
Air Temperature: 55 - 82 degrees
Water Temperature:
Lake Level: 555.77'
Weather Conditions: 4 - 10 MPH East - North East Wind. Cool morning. Very Nice Day

Took vacation from work to fish. Concentrated on previously marked brush piles and drop offs. Caught a couple, but markedly slower that 4/18/17. Picked up a couple trolling. Slow morning. I believe I missed most of the spawn. Not much luck under bridge early. Worked small pocket next to road south of bridge with Bobby Garland Money Milk and picked up 2-3 nice bluegill by casting. Worked a lot of bays, shoreline, shallows, tree tops - Not much luck at all. Returned to brush and drop off and picked up a couple more. Jigs, spider rigging much more effective than minnows. Caught 2-3 undersized crappie. Size noticeably smaller than previous trips. Ended day with 5-6 crappie and 2 nice bluegill. Also caught a smallmouth near the road.

Fish cleaned still had some eggs, however, I feel most of the spawn is over.

Air Temperature: 36 - 72 degrees
Water Temperature:
Lake Level: 555.65'
Weather Conditions: 3 - 8 MPH South East Wind. Cool morning.

Perfect Day! Fished almost solely around 2nd creek bay, drop off, and bridge. Had luck with every technique. Marked brush piles in westward bay and bay mouth drop off. First day spider-rigging. Fished both jigs and minnows with jigs extremely out performing minnows. Biting all colors, but good luck on /Bobby Garland Money Milk and orange with glitter. Brush piles paid off the best. Even caught some on casting jigs over piles. Trolled brush mainly but also bounced bottom under bridge with some luck. Kept 8 crappie, 6 bluegill, 2 yellow bass, and 1 white bass. Seems to be pre-spawn pattern with spawn coming on very soon.

Returned to bridge after lunch and resumed catching crappie. Fished minnows bouncing bottom. 20-25' of water. Caught several nice deep water bluegill. Kept 6 crappie and 4 bluegill.
