Crappie with Kevin

Cedar Creek Reservoir

Time: 7:15 AM - 4:00 PM
Air Temperature: 48 - 68F degrees during trip
Water Temperature:
Lake Level: 579.67
Weather Conditions: Mostly Sunny, windy, cool. Winds sustained North 10-14 mph

After my awesome trip a couple weeks ago, I got up with Kevin and we headed back to see how we could do.  We had a massive cool front move through the night before and winds were picking up and temps were headed down into the low 40s for nightly lows.  We weren't sure how we'd do with this sudden change in weather, but thought we'd give it a try.

The wind was definitely a challenge.  We started the morning fishing east of Britton Bridge around the powerlines before the wind got up.  We knew we'd be most exposed to the wind here, so wanted to get it fished early.  We fished jigs tipped with tuffies in 12-14 FOW and had good luck immediately.

We moved around mid day and did some scouting around Slickrock and found a new spot that produced some of the best fish of the day.  As we were leaving there, we found a school of crappie bunched up and not relating to structure.  We chased them around with the trolling motor for a few minutes and pulled 3 out of there.

We moved out on the west side of the lake and fished the north shore as the wind got up.  We caught a few crappie, but all were small.  We did pull out 5-6 nice bass from this area.

We refished our morning areas after lunch, but the action had turned off.  The wind really made jigging structure tough and we stayed snagged, but I felt we did pretty good considering conditions.  Finished the day with 17 keepers and probably about as many throwbacks.  Looking forward to the next trip!

Serious Wind

Cedar Creek Reservoir

Time: 7:30 AM - 3:00 PM
Air Temperature: 61 - 7 degrees during trip
Water Temperature:
Lake Level: 578.64
Weather Conditions: Mostly Sunny. Strong winds W-SW 17 mph sustained with 28 mph gusts

I almost stayed home today due to the wind, but I really wanted to get out one more time for scouting before our family trip in a couple weeks.  The wind was serious with nearly 17 mph sustained all day.  It really limited where I could fish to pretty much only the south banks.

I started the day off on submerged structure with jigs and moved to the flats as the day warmed up and fished minnows under a bobber.  I caught fish pretty much every place I stopped but they were a bit scattered.  I fished around my normal spots around Britton Bridge area.  The hot spot of the day was the little pocket beside the dock and road to the SW of the boat landing.  I ended up catching 28 with 23 keeper crappie.  I could have easily limited out in less windy conditions, but the wind made managing my line, bobber, and hook set very difficult.  Nevertheless, it was a very good day of fishing.  I have to brag on my new shallow water anchor pole.  I put on the Minn Kota Talon a couple months ago and was amazed that it held firm even in the strong wind.  I highly recommend.  As far as the crappie, one out of every 6-8 fish were female.  Still looking good for being at beginning of the spawn.

First time out on Little Bear

Little Bear Creek Reservoir

Time: 7:30 AM - 3:00 PM
Air Temperature: 63 - 72 degrees during trip
Water Temperature:
Lake Level: 618.17
Weather Conditions: Mostly Cloudy, light rain. Winds South 17 mph

I fished Little Bear for the first time today.  We always rent a cabin on Little Bear at Elliot's Branch each April for our family fishing trip, but we always trailer the boat over to Cedar Creek.  We've always wondered how the fishing was on Little Bear.

It was a pretty nasty day with light rain and sustained high winds.  I spent a lot of time just driving around and getting familiar with the water.  I probably covered about 30% of the lake.

While it looked fishy, it was a slow day.  I caught 8-10 accidental bass and about 12 crappie with 8 of them being keepers.  All were males and in spawn colors, so I'd say spawn is definitely starting up.

I definitely need some more time exploring this lake, but I'd come back.  It was a fruitful day despite crummy weather.  Fished almost exclusively minnows under a bobber today.

Big Wind, Big Waves, a Little Nauseous.

Wheeler Lake - Browns Ferry

Time: 8:00 AM - 12:30 PM
Air Temperature: 32 - 37 during trip
Water Temperature:
Lake Level: 552.23
Weather Conditions: Cold, windy, extremely cloudy. Winds N-NE- 15 MPH. Very tough conditions.

I set out today to see if the striped bass had moved in.  They have not... I was fishing jumbo shiners along the pipeline and using the spotlock to hold me.  Incredibly windy.  Caught 4-5 cats and 4-5 drum.  Very rough wind and waves to the point I was actually getting seasick.  But the spotlock trolling motor held me spot on.

Put the ball in the net...

Cedar Creek Reservoir

Time: 7:30 AM - 3:00 PM
Air Temperature: 66 - 81 degrees during trip
Water Temperature:
Lake Level: 581.57 - Slightly high
Weather Conditions: Mostly Sunny, warm.  Winds  S 14 mph sustained.

Today was almost a carbon copy weather day as it was two days ago with Kyle, except strong sustained winds.  That didn't stop James and I from giving it hell.

We were severely limited to fishing the southern banks as a result of the wind, but we made the best of it.  We fished all my typical southern spots, but found the best luck under the bridge in the southern creek in about 1.5 FOW in a very, very unlikely spot.  We must have pulled a dozen good fish out of a little creek behind the road levee.  They were slabs.  We also had some good luck around the Britton Bridge area on both sides of the road.  It was a great day.  Even found a nice soccer ball for my boy.  Ended the day with 20 very nice keepers, which we split.  My son "helped" me clean fish!!

2022 Family Crappie Fishing Vacation - April 11-14 2022

Cedar Creek Reservoir

April 11-14, 2022
Air Temperature: Lows around 60 degrees, Highs 66-82 Degrees
Lake Level: 580.15 - 580.65
Weather Conditions: Partly Cloudy. Very windy.  Variable

This week kicked off our annual family crappie fishing week.  My brother-in-law has a new baby, so we invited my Dad's father-in-law out for the week.

April 11th, Monday

We arrived at the cabins mid day and got settled in Ronnie arrived around 2:30 and we were anxious to get on the water.  The weather forecast had been changing constantly and was calling for a potential windy and wet week.  This afternoon was forecast to actually be the best weather of the week, so we definitely needed to give it a go.  Weather was sunny and a little cool with the temp around 66 degrees.  The wind was blowing strong from the south and the southern bays were pretty much the only thing we could fish comfortably.  We tried all my regular spots, but struggled quite a bit figuring out how to fish in the high wind and be successful.  Not much activity in the shallows.  We managed to pull out 7 nice keepers in the in about 3 hours and threw several shorts back.

We came back to the cabin and cooked burgers.  We might not have caught a lot of fish, but we had a great time sharing stories and had a better game plan for the next day.

April 12th, Tuesday

Today as fairly cloudy and overcast and the barrage of southern winds carried on stronger than the day before.  We had to delay our morning a bit due to lingering showers but finally started out the day trying to fish some deeper water given the limited success from the previous day in the shallows.  However, we didn't have much more luck in the deeper water.  We tried a couple different approaches and picked up some scattered fish.  We ended up moving back into the shallows after lunch and the fish had seemed to move in there a little better.  I don't fish the 2nd southern bay east of the levee much, but a fallen tree on the east bank produced very well.  The wind still made it a struggle, but we ended up keeping 12 good fish with close to that many shorts thrown back.  We missed several as we were having a good time and not paying as much attention as we probably should have.

We came back in and fried some crappie for dinner.  It was excellent.

April 13th, Wednesday

The weather man said today would be the absolute worst weather day and it would be wet, but thankfully, he missed his mark.  Cloudy morning turned into a fairly clear afternoon, the the wind still would not relent.  We concentrated on shallows again as the day was warmer than the previous.  We definitely noticed a trend where the fish were moving shallow better as the day warmed.  We picked up fish much more quickly today and were picking up a couple good crappie at every stop.  The fish also had good size to them.  We weren't throwing as many back.  We probably had around a dozen fish by lunch and decided to find a bank with some shade and wind cover to take a picnic.  After lunch, as we were pulling off the bank, Dad noticed some brush in the shallow water near where we parked the boat and suggested we give it a try.  It was on the east bank in a spot I had never fished.  We have it a try..

And BINGO. We found them.

The fish were holding transitional structure in about 4-7 FOW in an area that had a lot of man made brush piles.  We floated minnows over top of the structure and began pounding the crappie.  Over the next couple hours, we managed to put a lot more big fish in the boat and ended the day with 30 keepers.  We threw back half a dozen or so and lost that many as well due to bad hook sets.  Late in the day I re-rigged us with sharper hooks.  These last couple hours were exactly what we were looking for.  We had a blast and were so happy the weather had cooperated (except for the wind).

Ronnie had to head back to Arkansas tonight, so we came in a bit early and cooked a nice steak dinner to send him of with.  We sure had a blast with him and he was quite a fisherman.  We had a great time bonding and look forward to doin it again.

We spent a good bit of time packing tonight to make our checkout the next morning a little quicker.

April 14th, Thursday

It stormed badly overnight.  Dad and I weren't in a terrible hurry.  We had to finish packing and check out, but after the prior afternoon results, we definitely wanted to get on the water for a couple hours before driving home.  We finally got on the water mid morning and started the day off where we had had so much luck the yesterday.  We caught some fish there, but nothing like the previous day, so we tried some other spots and pick up several fish along the way.  As the morning went on, the water turned a deep mud brown as rain brought runoff into the lake.  We realized pretty quickly that fish were not biting in the muddy water areas, but were doing much better in areas that stayed clear.  There was a definite gradient, so we stuck to clearer water.  We had intended to leave right after lunch, but stopped by the south bank near the ramp as a final stop on the way in and found the fish here again.  I concentrated on fishing shallow brush, whereas Dad was throwing a bobber a little deeper over sunken structure and allowing it to float through 4-7 FOW.  We were both catching fish regularly.  We had such a good time here doing this that we ended up staying a couple hours longer than we mean to, but we ended up putting 22 more keepers in the boat.  It was an excellent way to wrap up our trip,

We finally called it quits and hit the road.  It was a fantastic week that was a big improvement over last year.  I believe we ended up with 71 keeper crappie and probably caught 90+ all together counting the shorts.  We're already talking about next year.

Three's Company

Cedar Creek Reservoir

Time: 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM
Air Temperature: 51 - 65 degrees during trip
Water Temperature:
Lake Level: 580.68
Weather Conditions: Cloudy. Winds N-NE 7-15 mph.  Windy.

Doug and Douglas joined me today for our annual Cedar Creek crappie outing.  I was tougher than my last trip for sure.  A front moved through a couple days earlier and I think they may have changed things a bit.

We started a repeat of my last trip, but fish were difficult to find in the shallows.  We caught a couple scattered here and there, but no big numbers at any spot in particular.  After a hard time in the shallows, we set up on deep structure and pulled 5-6 fish out of the deep on jigs tipped with minnows.  The deeper fish seemed to be bigger females.

Action picked up a little bit after lunch and we pulled a few decent fish out of the Lost Creek area around boat docks and creek inlets with minnows under a bobber.

We had a good day, but it was definitely tougher fishing.  We ended up with 16 keepers.  Should have had another 5-6 more for sure, but we struggled a bit with hook sets.

Douglas took the fish home and cleaned them.  4 of the 16 were female.  Seems we're still fairly early in the spawn.

Eve of Christmas Eve

Wheeler Lake - Mooresville / Arrowhead Landing

Time: 7:00 AM - 3:00 PM
Air Temperature: 28 - 61 degrees during trip
Water Temperature:
Lake Level: 551.57
Weather Conditions: Sunny. Winds North- North East 2-12 MPH.

Returned to Arrowhead today on a solo Christmas vacation trip.  Glad I did!

Early in, the fish wouldn't touch a jig.  Had early success fishing minnows under a bobber and caught consistently.  As it warmed up, I was determined to get them to hit jigs on the Livescope.  I tried all my trusty colors, but couldn't get them to commit.  I could seem them come inspect my jig, then move on.  Finally I put on a white tube body with chartreuse skirt and tipped it with a minnow.  Bingo.

I fished this way from lunch onwards as the wind picked up with great success.  I ended up getting into some skipjack, too, so I put 9 in the live well for future catfish bait.

Caught 60 total crappie today with 15 keepers.  Caught another 9 or so bluegill, bass, etc.  Ended the day with right around 90 total fish caught.  Excellent day.
